Gandhi Jayanti - International Day of Non-Violence

Hello Gandhi Collectors,

Today is 142 Birthday of Mahatma Gandhi who was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, a coastal town in Gujarat, India (which was then part of the Bombay Presidency, British India before India Independence) He was born in his ancestral home, now known as Kirti Mandir, Porbandar.

Gandhi Jayanti is a National Holiday celebrated in India to mark the occasion of the birthday of Mohandas Gandhi, the "Father of the Nation." He was born on October 2, 1869. Hence Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year on the 2nd of October. It is one of the three official declared National Holidays of India and is observed in all Indian states and union territories.

United Nations "International Day of Non-Violence" is marked on 2 October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence.

According to General Assembly resolution A/RES/61/271 of 15 June 2007, which established the commemoration, the International Day is an occasion to "disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness". The resolution reaffirms "the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence" and the desire "to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence".

To celebrate this events in 2009 United Nations, India, Romania and Croatia honored Mahatma Gandhi with stamp or special cancellation.  Also FAKE German Cancellation was also made to honored Mahatma Gandhi.!! Click following  link to read my previous blog post related to this events.

There will be lot of events  in India as well as around the world to celebrate his birthday as "Gandhi Jayanti"  or "International Day of Non-Violence". It will be very hard to know all the events going on in whole world as there will be too many. I know there will be big one in Kirti Mandir (Porbander), Ahmedabad (Gandhi Ashram) and various cities in India as well as in World.

To celebrate his 142 birthday, I worked with my friend on Mahatma Gandhi Statue Unveiling Cermony cover from Ottawa, Canada.
